Brief History Of Nagarathar sangam,
Coimbatore
It
is no wonder that this textile city of Coimbatore having a salubrious climate for most part of the year and inhabited by hard
working people with pleasing manners and polite behavior attracted Nagarathars to come to this city and start businesses way
back in 1870 or so. Nagarathars of Devakottai are said to be pioneers in the textile field in this cotton city who started
big textile mill of Kaleeswarar Mills in the vicinity of another giant mill of Stanes Mill started by foreigners.
Nagarathars
at Coimbatore used to assemble at the famous Patteeswarar Temple. They established a trust and constructed their own abode
for overnight stay and Nandavanam at Perur for offering garlands regularly to the temple; On one occasion when they met, they
felt the need of Nagarathars Association based Coimbatore for interaction among them for the general welfare of the community
people at Coimbatore.
Accordingly
they formed Kovai Nagarathar Sangam on 04.10.1964, The sangam prospered under the able guidance of its Founder President,
Late Sri.AR.L.V.Natarajan Chettiar of Devakottai. A mammoth gathering attended the auspicious inauguration of Kovai nagarathar
Sangam held at Perur in the presence of the three top-most V.V.I.P’s of Nagarathar community, Late Sri M.A.Muthiah Chettiar,
Textile king Late Sri Karumuthu Thiagarajan Chettiar and Industrial King Late Sri A.M.M.Murugappa Chettiar. That was a rare
occasion when all the three V.V.I.P’s appeared on the stage and entire community felt proud and elated to have arranged
for such a meeting
Kovai
Nagarathar Sangam purchased land at Cowley Brown Road, R.S.Puram on 16-05-1968 and constructed a building for Sangam activities
during 1973 – 74.Rani Meyyammai Hall is in the first floor, shops and rooms are in the ground floor for letting them
out for rentals to augment the resources of Nagarathar Sangam
The
auspicious opening of the building was celebrated on 17-11-1974.Industrialist Late Sri L. Alagu Sundaram Chettiar presided
over the function and Raja Sir M.A.Muthia Chettiar declared open the building. The great poet Late Sri Kannadasan released
the souvenir published to commemorate the gala opening of the Saangam building
Kovai
nagarathar Sangam established an elementary school under the name and style of “ Brindavan Vidhyalaya “ and nurtured
it to high school level in due course by contributing periodical donations. Later on a separate trust was formed under the
name and style of “Covai Nagarathar Education Trust” for the management and administration of the school which
is now functioning independently in its own spacious building with student strength of 850 or so with courses up to plus two.
Kovai
Nagarathar Sangam Trust put up additional construction comprising a spacious meeting hall known as Malaysia Singapore Hall,
two guest rooms, additional bathrooms and kitchen in two stages.
Kovai
Nagarathar Sangam is well known for its religious, social and cultural meetings, medical and immunition camps subsidized by
philanthropists, honouring eminent people for their attainment of prestigious and honourable positions in life and honouring
students for their outstanding performances in studies and extra curricular activities. Of late, participation of Nagarathar
ladies/achis in all the functions organised by Kovai nagarathar Sangam is very much satisfactory and proposals are underway
to Nagarathar Mathar sangam.
Kovai
Nagarathar Ilaingar Sangam functions very well and the interest evinced by the youths of our community in organasing homams, poojas,
padayatras and students cultural activities is commendable.
Yet
another squall to our cap is that we were the pioneers in organising and performing all homams in Tamil language in
our sangam premises by Thavththiru Perur Adigalar which was well attended.
Kovai
Nagarathar Sangam’s activities were acclaimed as best by Nagarathar Sangams of other places in the South India
and that is because of the spontaneous offering of services of all the trust and executive committee members
